Nagasaki University International House

As a place where foreign students and foreign researches can visit, the “Nagasaki University International House” in Nishimachi (Nishimachi Main Building, Nishimachi Building A and Nishimachi Building B) was built in Sakamoto.
Entrance Qualifications Eligibility
A person has to meet the following conditions
  • Must be a foreign student at Nagasaki university
  • Must be a foreign researcher at Nagasaki university or a family member
Admission Period
From March 16 to September 15, and from September 16 to March 15 divided every half-terms each.
In principle, housing is for six months, however, international exchange students are able to reside for one-year.

As a general rule, new applicants are given priority when selecting foreign residents.
Application method
Those wishing to apply must complete and submit the application forms during the application period. In addition, in the case of many applicants, a lottery system will be used to determine results.
Attention When Moving
Time for entering is between from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays. One cannot move on weekends, holidays, and evenings.

Four Buildings (Nishimachi Main Building, Nishimachi A Building, Nishimachi B Building, Sakamoto Annex)
Other Points
  • A tutor (a Japanese student or foreign student accustomed to life in Japan) lives in both the Nishimachi Building and the Sakamoto Building and are available for consultation and guidance.
  • All residents must participate in orientation and fire drills.
Utilities and Internet
  • In Nishimachi, electricity, water and the Internet is included in utilities, but gas charge is paid by each room/unit to gas supply company, while in Sakamoto, gas is also included in utilities.
    For short-term resident students, ¥8,000 per month in Nishimachi, and ¥10,500 per month in Sakamoto
    For researchers, ¥10,500 per month, ¥350 per day (at the Family room in Nishimachi, ¥15,000 per month, ¥500 per day)
  • As for the Internet, Sakamoto Annex and Nishimachi Main Building are equipted with LAN cable, Building A and Building B have Wi-fi access.
Payment Method
Rent and utilities are billed in April and in October.

Housing Situation in Nagasaki

In Japan, when making a housing contract, it is customary to pay a deposit and a gratuity to the landlord. A guarantor is necessary for making a contract. In Nagasaki, rent for a unit with a small kitchen and bath is around 30,000 to 40,000 yen.
  • Funds needed when borrowing an apartment

    • Deposit : This money is used for repairs and must be paid as a security. It is usually the amount of 1-3months of rent.
    • Application Fee : These charges are paid to the real estate agent. It is usually in the amount of one month of rent.

Nagasaki University International Student Housing Guarantor

When renting a room in Japan, a guarantor is generally necessary. At Nagasaki University, there is the system of performing joint liability on guarantee for internatioinal students having difficulty in finding a guarantor. However, it is necessary for the international student to meet certain conditions to receive a guarantor.
