Japanese Language Education

Japanese language programs for foreign learners who are interested in studying Japanese.
Eligible Applicants:
Eligible applicants for each program depend on their status
  • Intensive Program – MEXT scholarship students (Embassy Recommendation)
  • General Program – International students (including exchange students) or researchers of Nagasaki University
  • Japanese Language Program offered by General Education – International undergraduate students and undergraduate exchange students

Intensive Program A–C

Intensive programs are for students on MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) scholarships. There are three (3) programs (A, B and C) based on the student’s Japanese level. The students will need to take seven (7) classes a week and complete all courses in the program to receive a certificate of completion.

  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Listening (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Kanji (1 class/week)

General Program

The General Program offers classes of various levels from elementary to advanced level. You will take a class of the suitable level based on the results of your placement test. The numbers in parentheses show the number of class offered per week.
Elementary Level ~ Advanced Level
Eligible Applicants
International students (including exchange students) or researchers of Nagasaki University

  • Elementary Japanese Ⅰ (5 classes/week)
  • Elementary Japanese Ⅱ (5 classes/week)
【Intermediate Level】　You may take up to 3 classes each from the following subjects. (Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ or Ⅱ)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Reading (2 classes/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Conversation (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Composition (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Listening (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅰ Kanji (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅱ Reading (2 classes/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅱ Conversation (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅱ Composition (1 class/week)
  • Intermediate Japanese Ⅱ Listening (1 class/week)

【Advanced Level】　You may take up to 2 classes each from the following subjects. (Advanced Japanese Ⅰ or Ⅱ)
  • Advanced Japanese Ⅰ Reading (2 classes/week)
  • Advanced Japanese Ⅰ Integrated Communication Skills (2 classes/week)
    *International undergraduate students and undergraduate exchange students may take Advanced JapaneseⅠ Reading and Advanced JapaneseⅠ Integrated Communication Skills only in the Fall semester. You may take Advanced Japanese Ⅰ offered by the General Education in Spring semester.


  • Advanced Japanese Ⅱ Integrated Communication Skills A (2 classes/week, offered in the Fall semester )
  • Advanced Japanese Ⅱ Integrated Communication Skills B (2 classes/week, offered in the Fall semester )
  • Advanced Japanese Ⅱ Integrated Communication Skills C (2 classes/week, offered in the Spring semester )
  • Advanced Japanese Ⅱ Integrated Communication Skills D (2 classes/week, offered in the Spring semester )
    *Advanced Japanese Ⅱ Integrated Communication Skills A, B, C and D are not available for international undergraduate students and undergraduate exchange students. You may take Advanced Japanese Ⅱa/b offered by the General Education.

Japanese Language Program offered by General Education

This program is for international undergraduate students. Undergraduate international students can also take this course if they have a suitable level of Japanese.
